Anton Nets Three Points in 2-2 Tie with Hartwick

Senior Eric Anton scored the Raiders' first goal and assist on the game-tying goal.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/24/07) – The Colgate University men’s soccer team played to a 2-2 tie with Hartwick College on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Van Doren Field in non-conference action.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead with an own goal for the only tally of the first half. The two teams traded goals just over seven minutes apart and the Raiders netted the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute.

Hartwick’s John Paul Boyle had the ball at the top of the 18-yard box, and Colgate goalkeeper David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) came out to make the stop as Boyle pushed the ball ahead. A Raider defender tried to help out by clearing the ball but the ball was deflected into the net for an own goal at 19:22.

Five minutes into the second half, Boyle had a chance to notch his second goal of the game as he was running in on net but a late push of ball gave Cappuccio the chance to come out and make the stop before he could get the shot off.

Colgate started to clean up its field passes and began applying some offensive pressure after the scare.

Senior Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) had a shot from inside the box but it was knocked away by Hartwick’s Ashton Henry. The ball was batted around inside the box before Anton gained possession and blasted a shot from the right side into the lower left corner to even the game at one apiece at 51:41.

Freshman Steven Miller (Ivyland, Pa.) had a chance in the 56th minute after Anton sent the ball up the field as a lead. After battling off his defender, Miller rifled a shot that went just wide right of the net.

Just one minute later Jonathan Garcia-Torres displayed some nifty footwork after finding a Hawk free kick and tried to sneak Hartwick’s second goal past Cappuccio but he was in good position to make the grab.

Not soon after Colgate drew another foul and Hartwick took a free kick from 30 yards out and the ball lofted into the box where Garcia-Torres tried the same play and it worked to his advantage. Cappuccio was there to make the stop but the ball slipped out of his gloves and rolled over the goal line at 58:44.

Anton factored into Colgate’s second goal when he was racing down the right side flank and outstretched his leg to push the ball up and past his defender to where Miller was running on. Miller was unimpeded in his path to the goal and sent a direct shot into the goal to tie the game at 2-2 at 83:02.

The Raiders had a chance to end the game with 40 seconds remaining in the first overtime after junior Glenn Volk (Lexington, Ky.) had a shot that deflected wide. Miller gave Colgate another chance in succession but his shot skimmed wide of the net for a goal kick.

Cappuccio finished the night with four saves, and Hartwick’s Jeremy Vuolo also made four stops.

Colgate had a 20-11 shot advantage including a 6-2 edge in the overtime sessions. The Raiders also took five corner kicks to the Hawks’ one.

Colgate (7-4-3) will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27, when it hosts Navy at 7 p.m.
