HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/2/07)—Binghamton University registered 17.5 team blocks and held Colgate to just .099 hitting to earn a 3-0 victory over the Raiders in non-conference volleyball action this evening on Cotterell Court. The Bearcats stopped Colgate’s six-match win streak with the 30-27, 30-25, 30-27 win.

The Raiders fall to 8-8 overall on the season, while Binghamton moves to 9-12. This was just Colgate’s second loss of the season on its home floor.

Junior Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the Raider offense with 13 kills, while junior Merryl Pohl (Seattle, Wash.) had nine for the match. Sophomore Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) added eight kills and eight digs. Sophomore setter Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wis.) handed out 38 assists and picked up nine digs.

Freshman Devon Applegate (Davidson, N.C.) led the defense with 13 digs in her first career start at libero. Classmate Sam Trauth (Naperville, Ill.) added a career-high 12 digs. Freshman Casey Ritt (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the front row defense with four blocks.

Kathleen Schauer paced Binghamton’s offense with 11 kills. Jacki Kane and Dawn Lammert added 10 kills apiece and Lammert posted a match-best .474 hitting percentage. Lindsey Mueller quarterbacked the offense with 35 assists and picked up seven digs. Jaclyn Strader anchored the back row defense with 19 digs, while Ashley Allen was outstanding at the net with 10 blocks. Lammert also added nine blocks to her strong offensive outing.

The first two games were very similar as the Raiders fell behind early in the contests. In the first game, the Bearcats used a 6-0 run to jump in front 7-2. Colgate battled back within two points a couple of times but could not regain the lead as it lost 30-27. The second game was much of the same for the Raiders as Binghamton rushed out to a 7-3 lead and built it to as many as six points before Colgate mounted a comeback. The Raiders made it a three-point game late, but Binghamton pulled through to earn the five-point win.

The third outing was a much better for Colgate and featured nine ties and three lead changes. Trailing 16-10, the Raiders went on a tear, scoring six straight points to tie the game and went ahead 18-17. The two teams continued to trade leads down the stretch, but a 6-3 run at the end gave Binghamton the 3-0 victory.

Colgate resumes conference play on Oct. 5 at American University. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Raiders will travel to Navy the following afternoon for a 4 p.m., contest with the Midshipmen.
