Men's Basketball Defeats Army In Overtime 73-71

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/6/07)Kyle Chones (Cleveland, OH) scored 16 points and Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) added 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Colgate to a 73-71 overtime win against Army in the Patriot League opener for both teams.
 
Colgate (6-8, PL 1-0) snapped a three-game losing streak, while Army (10-6, PL 0-1) loses for the fourth time in its last five outings.  The Raiders have defeated the Cadets five straight times in the series.
 
Other Colgate players in double figures were Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) with 12 points, equaling his career high, and Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) with 10.
 
Army was led by Jarell Brown with a career-high 30 points, including a career-best seven 3-pointers.  Matt Bell added 18 points for the Cadets.
 
After ending regulation in a 65-65 tie, Colgate scored the first seven points of overtime, getting four points from Kendall Chones and a 3-pointer by Waddy.  Army came right back with six straight points to trail 72-71 with 34.9 seconds remaining getting four points from Bell and a pair of free throws by Brown.  After a series of possession changes, Colgate’s Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) made the second of two free throws to put Colgate ahead by two with 16 seconds left.  Army’s Chris Walker was fouled with two-tenths of a second left, but missed both free throws in an attempt to send the game to another overtime period.
 
With the Chones brothers combining for 25 first half points, Colgate lead by as many as 11 points before settling for a 37-29 halftime lead.
 
In the second half, Army opened the final 20 minutes with a 10-2 run to tie the game, 39-39.  After Colgate went back up by eight points with 11:38 remaining, the Cadets rallied to take a one-point lead, 63-62, with 3:14 remaining.  Woodhouse made a pair of free throws with 1:14 remaining to put Colgate back in front, but Army’s Bell scored on a layup to take back the lead, 65-64, with 1:01 left.  Woodhouse again scored from the charity stripe with 43.6 remaining to send the contest into overtime.  After a missed Army shot, Waddy had a shot at the buzzer to win the contest for the Raiders.
 
Army had a slim edge in rebounding 33-32 over the Raiders led by Walker with five.  Kyle Chones, Woodhouse, Tim Pounds (Dudley, NC) and Waddy had four apiece for Colgate.
 
Colgate had an excellent shooting night from the free throw line making 18-of-22 attempts, while Army managed only 13-of-21.
