Wayne State Shuts Down Colgate, 5-0 in Women's Hockey

Colgate takes on Cornell in a home-and-home series on Jan. 12-13.

TAYLOR, Mich. (1/6/07) – The Wayne State women’s hockey team kept Colgate from a weekend sweep with a 5-0 shutout on Saturday, January 6 at Taylor Sportsplex.
 
The loss ended Colgate’s four-game win streak and marked the first time the Raiders have been shutout this season.
 
The Warriors had three goals in the first period and added two more in the third, as they outshot the Raiders 19-18.
 
Ashley King got things started early for Wayne State with an unassisted marker at 1:38. Sam Poyton and Melissa Boal scored within three minutes of each other with Lindsay DiPietro assisting on each to take the 3-0 goal lead at the close of the first frame.
 
The Raiders came out firing on all cylinders in the second, taking an 11-4 shot advantage but couldn’t sneak one by goaltender Tiffany Thompson.
 
Poyton added her second goal of the contest at 5:36 in the third period with help from Tegan Schroeder and Danielle Wilson.  With under five minutes remaining in regulation Laura Monk sealed the win with tally at 15:31 off a feed from Brandi Frakie.
 
Senior Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made 14 saves in net for Colgate, while Thompson stopped 18 for Wayne State.
 
Colgate will play in a home-and-home series with ECACHL travel partner Cornell on Jan. 12-13.  The two squads will face off at Lynah Rink on Friday at 7 p.m., and at Starr Rink the following day at 4 p.m.
