HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/3/06) – Ryan Wittman tallied 16 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead Cornell to a 64-53 win over Colgate Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.
Cornell (5-7) snaps a four-game losing streak, while Colgate (5-8) drops its third straight contest.
Other Cornell players in double figures were Louis Dale with 14, Andrew Naeve with 12 and Graham Dow with 11. The Big Red shot 42 percent from the field, including 50 percent from behind the arc (7-of-14). They also made 17-of-18 free throw attempts.
Senior guard
Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) led Colgate with a game-high 22 points, while
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) tallied 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) came off the bench to score eight points and grab four rebounds for the Raiders.
Colgate continued its cold shooting managing only 37 percent from the field, and 26 percent from 3-point range.
Colgate jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, and held a 9-2 advantage with 14:53 remaining, before going scoreless for the next nine minutes while Cornell tallied 11 straight points.
The Big Red was able to move out to a nine-point lead before settling for a 23-17 halftime lead.
In the second half, Colgate rallied to a take one-point lead, 46-45, with 4:42 remaining, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Jason Battle and Wittman put Cornell back in front for good. The Big Red made 10 straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Naeve was Cornell’s leading rebounder with seven caroms, while Colgate held a slight edge on the boards, 30-29.
Colgate will open its Patriot League on Saturday at home against Army. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
