Kyle Chones (Cleveland, OH) tallied 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Colgate to a 66-58 win over Navy Saturday in a Patriot League game at Alumni Hall.
Colgate (7-13 overall, 2-5 PL) snapped a five-game losing streak while sending Navy (11-11, 1-6 PL) to its fourth straight loss. The Raiders have defeated the Midshipmen four straight times, and won eight straight over the service academies in the league.
Chones, who was making his first start since Nov. 22 against Canisius, helped Colgate to its third best shooting percentage of the season. The Raiders made 22-of-41 for 53 percent.
Sophomore
Willie Morse (State College, PA) came off the bench to score nine points, including a pair of key 3-pointers, while
Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) and
Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) added eight apiece.
Navy was led by Greg Sprink with 23 points, including the Mids last nine points, while Trey Stanton had eight points and six rebounds.
After falling behind by four points early in the first half, Colgate scored seven straight points to open a three-point advantage, 12-9.
Trevaron Vinson (Grand Prairie, TX) had five points in the run, while Waddy tallied two points.
Later in the first half, the Raiders held a 23-19 advantage, before the Mids scored five straight points for a 24-23 lead with 3:47 remaining. Colgate, however, came back on a lay up by
Todd Checovich (North Hampton, NH) and a free throw and 3-pointer by Morse for a 29-24 halftime lead.
Colgate opened the second half with a 7-2 run to open a 10-point lead, 36-26. The Mids responded with a 13-5 run to cut the deficit to one point, 40-39, with 11:56 remaining. Later, Colgate lead 44-42 before exploding for nine straight points led by Morse’s 3-pointer and four points by Simon for its biggest lead of the game, 53-42. The closest the Mids would come was seven points in the final seconds.
Colgate out-rebounded Navy 27-25 led by Chones with six and Checovich with five.
The Raiders will home to face Bucknell on Tuesday night at Cotterell Court. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
