HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/27/07) - The Colgate University women's swimming and diving team broke two relay records as it defeated both Binghamton and UMass in its final meet of the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 27, at Lineberry Natatorium. The Raiders scored a 222-78 victory over the Bearcats, and edged out the Minutewomen, 183-117.
The rookie quartet of Leslie Strobel (Apple Valley, Minn.), Alaina Sullivan (Shaker Heights, Ohio), Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.), and Kim Siembieda (Narberth, Pa.) broke Colgate's freshman record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.41, earning first-place honors. Their time was 0.37 seconds faster than the record set by the class of 2009’s relay last season.
In the final event of the day, Colgate's 400 free relay broke the Lineberry Natatorium record with a winning time of 3:29.60, which ranks third in school history. The previous pool record of 3:30.09 had been set by Bucknell in 1993. The team consisted of Kate Murphy, and sophomores Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.), Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.), and Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.).
Walker was victorious in the 100 back, posting the eighth-best time ever at Colgate, 58.17. Classmate Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) was second in a personal-best time of 1:00.00, which ranks seventh on Colgate’s all-time performers list. Walker also won the 200 back, finishing in 2:08.65. Junior Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) was third with a time of 2:13.56. Walker added a third victory in the 100 fly, edging out UMass’ Liz Lovejoy by 0.21 seconds with a time of 59.77.
Marchi won the 200 free in the ninth-fastest time in school history, 1:52.82. Bottger took third in the event, finishing in 1:56.29. Bottger later earned her second-straight win in the 50 free, touching the wall in 24.50.
Sullivan moved up to ninth on the Raiders’ all-time performers ledger with a winning time of 1:08.00 in the 100 breast. She shaved 0.23 seconds of her previous personal best. Freshman
Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) was second, touching the wall 0.75 seconds behind her teammate.
Emily Murphy won the 200 IM in 2:12.53, and Curran placed third in the event, turning in a time of 2:15.51.
Colgate earned the trifecta in the 500 free. Marchi took another first-place finish with a time of 5:12.11, just edging out teammate

Karen Baker (Houston, Texas) came in third with a time of 5:21.81. Baker won the 1000 free in 10:50.29. Seamans took second in the event with her second-best time of the season, 10:55.37.
The Raiders took three of the top four spots in the 100 free. Marchi earned her second win of the meet with a time of 52.47, just beating out Bottger who finished second in 52.53.
Emily Murphy was fourth, posting a time of 54.32.
Colgate also snagged three of the top four places in the 200 breast. Sullivan earned her second win of the day with a time of 2:27.80. She was followed by Curran, who swam the race in 2:29.78. Junior
Magdalena Mango (New York, N.Y.) came in fourth, posting a time of 2:35.36.
The Raiders will use the next three weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championship, which will be held Feb. 15-17 at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. Colgate will be seeking its first conference title, after finishing second to the four-time defending champion Bison by the slimmest margin in league history last year. The Raiders were picked to finish second to Navy in this year’s league preseason poll.
