ITHACA, N.Y. (1/27/07) – The No. 18 Cornell hockey team exacted revenge on Colgate for Thursday’s loss at Starr Rink by taking a 2-1 win in Ithaca on Saturday, Jan. 27.

The Big Red scored what stood up as the game-winner at the 13:38 mark of the third period after the Raiders back-peddled into their own zone, and then were unable to bring the puck back out. Cornell’s Topher Scott stole the puck away from the Raider defenseman and got it to Dan Glover, who worked it down low for a wrap-around chance. Junior goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) made save, but through a mass of bodies in front, Justin Milo pushed the puck over the goal line.

Cornell defenseman Doug Krantz took a major penalty for hitting from behind with 4:37 remaining in the final period, putting Colgate on the power play for the rest of regulation. The Raiders pulled Dekanich in favor of the extra skater, and, following an offsides call, Colgate was able to reset with a faceoff just outside the zone with 14.8 seconds left. However, the Big Red were successful in tying up the puck just long enough to run down the clock and seal the win.

After a scoreless first period, Colgate broke the tie 4:46 into the middle frame. From the top of the left circle, sophomore Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) sent a pass down to junior assistant captain Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) near the goal line. Winchester threw the puck at the net, but Cornell goaltender Ben Scrivens made the save. Junior assistant captain Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) fought a Cornell defender for the rebound, and fended him off as they skated behind the net. Burton shook him when he reached the right side, and put his shot five-hole on Scrivens.

Cornell answered six minutes later. Jared Seminoff found Brendan Nash on the right point. Nash fired the puck toward the net, but missed wide, and the puck took a hard bounce off the end boards. Mitch Carefoot picked it up on the left side of the crease, and chipped it over Dekanich’s pad.

Dekanich finished the game with 34 saves as Colgate was outshot 36-25. Scrivens made 24 stops to earn the win.

The Raiders return to Starr Rink to host St. Lawrence and Clarkson, Feb. 2-3, both at 7:00 p.m. Colgate will collect donations for the Make-A-Wish Foundation at both games in honor of 8-year-old fan Miranda Hadlock, a cancer patient and former “wish kid”. Both games will be televised live on Time Warner Sports in Upstate New York.
