Box ScoreHAMILTON, N.Y. (1/25/07) – Colgate junior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) put on a show, making 39 saves to lead the Raiders to a 4-2 win over No. 18 Cornell on Thursday, Jan. 25, at Starr Rink. The win puts Colgate at .500 in league play with a 5-5-3 record, and gives the Raiders a 11-12-4 overall mark.
As his team was outshot 41-14 on the night Dekanich stood up to the Big Red onslaught, including stopping 16 of the 17 shots he faced in the third period. Sophomore Troy Davenport started the game for Cornell, and made just four saves on six shots before being replaced by freshman Ben Scrivens. Scrivens recorded six saves, and took the loss after allowing the game-winning goal.
After going scoreless on their last 28 power-play opportunities, the Raiders capitalized on four of their six chances against the Big Red, netting all of their goals on the man advantage, including scoring on each of their first two chances. At the other end of the ice, Colgate killed off eight of Cornell’s nine power play chances.
The Raiders got on the board quickly, scoring on the power play 3:09 into the game. Junior assistant captain
Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) stripped the puck from a Big Red player, and passed it ahead to sophomore
Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.). From the point, St. Pierre found Winchester who then threaded the puck back to Burton. Burton fired a snapshot over Davenport’s glove to give Colgate a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders’ second power play of the night helped them build a two-goal advantage midway through the second period. Sophomore
Jason Fredricks (Eagle River, Wis.) passed to freshman
David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) from the point, and he tucked a shot under the crossbar glove-side from close range. Sophomore
Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) also assisted on the play.
As the seconds ticked down toward the end of the middle session, Cornell broke up Dekanich’s shutout bid. Tony Romano passed the puck across the slot to Doug Krantz, who ripped the puck over Dekanich’s right shoulder with 20 seconds before the break to make it 2-1 heading into the final frame.
Cornell returned to the ice clamoring for the tying goal, and got it 4:33 into the period after Raider sophomore
Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.) was sent out of the game on a major penalty. Mark McCutcheon scored 2:52 into the five-minute power play to knot the game at two-all.
Less than four minutes later, Colgate regained its lead with its third straight power play goal. Junior
Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) sent a pass across the ice to St. Pierre, and it bounced off him and out to senior
Marc Fulton (Vancouver, B.C.). Fulton controlled the puck, hesitated, then scored top-shelf on Scrivens.
Cornell put Scrivens on the bench with 53 seconds left in the third period in favor of the extra skater, but Byron Bitz went to the box with 35 seconds to play to negate the man advantage. Colgate capitalized when senior
Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) sprung Winchester toward the open goal, and he scored to ice the win.
The Big Red not only dominated the Raiders in shots, but also in faceoffs, 43-32. The Colgate win evens the teams’ series record at Starr Rink at 26-26-3.
Cornell is in its longest winless streak – seven games - during the Mike Schafer era, and has a 9-8-3 overall record and 5-5-3 mark in league play. The two teams are tied for fourth in the conference heading into Saturday’s rematch in Ithaca. That game begins at 8:00 p.m., and will be televised live in Upstate New York on Time Warner Sports.
