HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/24/2007)—Colgate University junior Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) turned in another strong performance with 20 points, six rebounds, and two assists, but it was not enough as the women’s basketball team fell to Holy Cross, 75-59, in Patriot League action this evening. Bethany O’Dell led all Crusaders with a game-high 24 points.

This is Cargle’s third straight 20-plus scoring performance as Colgate falls to 2-19 overall and 1-5 in league play. Holy Cross snaps a two-game skid to improve to 7-14 on the season and 2-4 against conference foes.

Freshman TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) was Colgate’s only other double digit scorer with 11 points. Holy Cross’s Kaitlin Foley added 15 points, while Brittany Keil rounded out the team’s leading scorers with 14 points. Keil also pulled down a team-high six boards for the Crusaders.

Colgate came out strong in the early minutes of the first half, leading 11-9 at the 14:05 mark. Holy Cross got a jumper from Tayana Carper on the next possession to tie the game and jumpstart a 19-4 run over the next seven minutes. That run gave the Crusaders a 28-15 lead with 6:57 left on the clock.

The Raiders scored five unanswered to cut it to eight points, 28-20, but Holy Cross closed out the half with a 9-3 run for a, 37-23, lead at the break.

Holy Cross pushed its lead to 16 points with a pair of free throws to start the second and never looked back on its way to the 16-point victory. The Raiders cut the lead to seven points twice, but both times the Crusaders answered right away with three-pointers to make it a 10-point game.

Junior Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in eight points and three assists for the Raiders. Colgate shot 46.2 percent from the floor for the game and turned the ball over 26 times. The Raiders outrebounded the Crusaders 32-27.

Holy Cross hit 47.3 percent of its shots from the field and got 26 points off of Colgate turnovers. The Crusaders were on fire from long range, knocking down 59 percent of its chances from behind the arc.

Colgate hits the road for a three-game road swing when it travels to Navy on Jan. 27. That game is set for 1 p.m.
