Bottger Gets First Collegiate Wins in Team Victory Over Cornell

Sophomore Ashley Bottger took first place in the 50 and 100 free to earn her first collegiate wins.

Sophomore Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.) earned her first collegiate victories by beating the field in the 50 and 100 free as the Colgate women's swimming and diving team defeated Cornell, 170.5-129.5, on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Bottger won the 50 free in a time of 24.59, edging Cornell's Leah Tourtellotte by 0.06 seconds. Sophomore Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished third in the event, posting a time of 25.06. Bottger was also victorious in the 100 free, posting a time of 52.93 to beat teammate Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who finished second in 53.17.

Bottger also anchored Colgate’s winning 400 free relay to end the meet. Her split of 53.02 was the fastest of the day, and gave the Raiders a total time of 3:34.93.

Marchi won the 200 free in 1:55.33, and freshman Kim Siembieda (Narberth, Pa.) was third, touching up in 1:58.87. Marchi was also a winner in the 500 free, finishing in 5:12.68.

Sophomore Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) won the 100 back by nearly three seconds, finishing in 1:00.31. Senior Leslie Petsoff (Glen Ridge, N.J.) was third with a time of 1:03.43.

Junior Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) earned her first win of the season in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.45. Walker was second with a time of 2:14.10.

Freshman Karen Baker (Houston, Texas) was second in the 1000 free, posting a time of 10:52.86.

The Raiders claimed the top two spots in both breaststroke events. Freshman Alaina Sullivan (Shaker Heights, Ohio) won both races, finishing the 100 in 1:08.85 and the 200 in 2:27.24. Classmate Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) was second both times, finishing the 100 in 1:09.90 and posting a time of 2:29.76 in the 200. Curran came in third in the 200 IM, edging out Seamans by 0.01 seconds in a time of 2:14.85.

Freshman Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) won the 200 fly with a time of 2:11.03. She finished second in the 100 fly to Tourtellotte, turning in a time of 58.91.

Senior Gretchen Swarr (Southport, Conn.) finished third in the three-meter diving competition, earning 213.30 points.
