Colgate Beats Both Bucknell and Army in Women's Swimming and Diving

Sophomore Lisa Marchi earned three individual wins and one relay victory in Colgate's sweep of Bucknell and Army.

LEWISBURG, Pa. (1/13/07) – Sophomore Lisa Marchi (Scottsdale, Ariz.) won three individual events and led off a winning relay to lead the Colgate women's swimming and diving team to wins against both Bucknell and Army in a Patriot League three-way dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 13, in Lewisburg. The Raiders bested four-time defending league champion Bucknell for the second straight year, 158-142, and defeated the Black Knights, 210-90.

Marchi captured the gold in the 100, 200 and 500 free events, and led off the winning 200 free relay. Marchi posted a time of 52.72 in the 100, and she was followed closely by classmate Ashley Bottger (Weston, Conn.), who earned a time of 53.21 to take second place. Marchi’s winning time in the 200 was 1:53.53, and she was followed by senior Keriann Fitzsimons (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Bottger, who were third and fourth, respectively. Marchi won the 500 in 5:08.42, while freshman Karen Baker (Houston, Texas) came in third with a personal-best time of 5:12.53.

Marchi helped the Raiders’ top relay team win the 200 free relay by swimming the lead-off leg in 24.63. She was followed into the pool by Fitzsimons, sophomore Emily Murphy (Syracuse, N.Y.), and Bottger, and the team finished in 1:37.76, which is good for sixth on Colgate’s all-time top-10 list. Colgate’s “B” relay was third, earning a time of 1:41.41.

Sophomore Beverly Walker (Marietta, Ga.) was a two-time winner, sweeping the backstroke events. She earned a time of 59.52 in the 100 and finished the 200 in 2:07.42. Emily Murphy placed third in the 100 with a personal-best time of 1:00.36, which places her seventh on Colgate’s all-time performers list. Junior Colby Seamans (Naperville, Ill.) was the runner-up in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:10.01. Walker also came in second in the 100 fly, posting a time of 59.09.

Freshman Kate Murphy (Williamsburg, Va.) won both butterfly events, posting times of 58.95 in the 100 and 2:10.04 in the 200. She also took fourth place in the 100 free with a time of 53.96. Sophomore Melanie Homoki (Allison Park, Pa.) earned a personal-best time of 2:20.50 in 200 fly to come in 10th.

Emily Murphy won the 50 free in a time of 24.59. Bottger was third, touching the wall just 0.01 seconds after the second-place finisher for a time of 24.71.

Freshman Caitlin Curran (Alpharetta, Ga.) earned runner-up honors in both breaststroke events, posting a time of 1:07.88 in the 100 and 2:25.94 in the 200. Classmate Alaina Sullivan (Shaker Heights, Ohio) took fourth place in the 200 with a personal-best time of 2:28.69.

Baker earned personal-best times in both the 1000 free and 400 IM. She was second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:40.75, and third in the 400 IM with a time of 4:37.30. Both of her performances place Baker sixth on Colgate’s all-time performers list in those events. Seamans also earned a PR in the 1000, posting a time of 10:52.74 to finish fourth.

In the meet’s opening event, Colgate took both second and third place points in the 200 medley relay. The “A” relay, composed of Emily Murphy, junior Kacy Reams (Evanston, Ill.), Walker and Kate Murphy, earned the 10th-best time in school history, 1:49.35, less than a second behind the winners from Bucknell.

The Raiders continue on to Penn for a non-conference meet on Sunday. Diving action begins at 11:00 a.m., while the swimming events start at 1:00 p.m.
