CANTON, N.Y. (1/13/07) – St. Lawrence freshman goaltender Alex Petizian made 19 saves to earn his second shutout of the season, 5-0, against Colgate on Saturday, Jan. 13, at Appleton Arena. The loss pushes the Raiders’ record to 9-12-3 overall this season, and 3-5-2 in the ECACHL, while the Saints improve to 11-9-1 overall and 7-2-0 in league play.
A pair of deflected pucks helped St. Lawrence build a 2-0 lead by the first intermission. The Saints got their first goal on the power play when Shawn Fensel shot from the top of the slot, and the puck was deflected five-hole by Kyle Rank.
Just over six minutes later, Matt Generous held the puck on the goal line along the far boards, and threw a centering feed toward the cage. The puck deflected off a couple of Colgate’s defensemen like a pinball, escaping the eyes of junior goaltender
Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.), before finding its way into the back of the net.
Another unlucky bounce for the Raiders put them in a 3-0 hole midway through the middle session. The Saints set up on the power play, and Rank found Drew Bagnall between the circles. Bagnall’s shot went wide to the right, but traced a perfect “V” behind the net, landing on the stick of Sean Flanagan to the left of the crease and he banged it home back-door.
SLU capitalized on a Colgate turnover just over the halfway point of the final frame to go up 4-0. The Raider defenseman was stripped of the puck as he was trying to break it out from behind his own net, and Jordan Hack came away with it. He threw it up to Jeremiah Cunningham at the right point, and he found Mark Wallmann between the circles. Wallmann’s shot beat Dekanich through traffic.
A few minutes after the Saint goal, Dekanich was replaced by freshman
Charles Long (Cleveland, Ohio), who last came into the game in relief in the season-opener against Vermont. Long didn’t allow a goal in that game, but he was unable to escape the Saints, as SLU netted their fifth goal less than two minutes after Long stepped on the ice. Hack shot from the right circle and beat the Raider rookie over his glove.
Dekanich finished the game with 21 saves, while Long made two stops over the final 5:36 of the third period as the Raiders were outshot 28-19. Each team won 31 faceoffs, and St. Lawrence finished 3-for-6 on the power play while Colgate was 0-for-9.
Colgate returns home to host Brown and Yale, Jan. 19-20, at Starr Rink. Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available through the Colgate ticket office by calling (315) 228-7600.
