LEWISBURG, Pa. (09/30/06) - The No. 24 ranked Colgate University men's soccer team played Patriot League foe Bucknell to a 1-1 tie on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Varsity Soccer Field.
Justin Wolf netted just the second goal this season against the potent Raider defense in the opening minute of the match. Bucknell gained possession near midfield and Nathan LaGrave quickly shuttled the ball to Alex Russo. Russo lofted the ball ahead to Wolf, who snuck behind the defense. Wolf kicked a line drive into the left side of the goal past Doug Litvack (Levittown, N.Y.).
Possessing the 1-0 lead, the Bison dominated the first half as they outshot the Raiders 7-2. Goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach was not called upon to make a single save in the first 45 minutes of play. He ended up with three saves in the contest.
The second half was a different story as Colgate was on its offensive side of the field much of the half, outshooting Bucknell 5-3 and winning the corner kick battle 7-0. The Bison defense was strong, but the Raiders finally found the back of the net with 8:02 remaining in regulation when Eric Anton (Tacoma, Wash.) headed in a goal off a pass from Charlie Lambropoulos (Lincolnwood, Ill.).
On the possession prior to the game-tying goal, Colgate also almost scored. The ball got in front of the net between three Raiders. Anton attempted a shot, but a diving Kuterbach took it right off Anton's foot.
Overall, Bucknell ended up outshooting Colgate 11-8, while the Raiders had more corner kicks (9-6). David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.), who has not allowed a goal in more than 500 minutes of action this season, relieved Litvack late in the second half and made one save in goal.
The Raiders and the Bison remain in a tie in the league standings. Both squads entered the weekend tied atop the standings with Lehigh, which faces American Saturday night at 7 p.m.
Colgate, one of the final unbeaten teams in the nation, is now 6-0-3 overall. The Raiders have allowed just two goals all season.
Colgate will play Hartwick on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at At A Glance Field at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y.
