HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/27/06) – The Colgate University women’s soccer team defeated regional rival Cornell, 2-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Van Doren Field. Junior Franny Iacuzzi (Evanston, Ill.) scored the game-winning goal in the Raiders' final non-conference contest of the season.
Iacuzzi notched the game-winning goal at 64:17 with a rocket to the upper right corner. After the ball was pinballed around in the box, freshman
Jillian Arnault (Clay, N.Y.) took control and fed Iacuzzi the ball for the goal.
Cornell surprised Colgate by taking the early 1-0 lead at 10:36. A Colgate defender stopped a Cornell breakaway low in the offensive zone, but the defender couldn’t gain possession of the ball. Caitlin Oliver recovered the ball and shot it to the left side of net.
Arnault
evened the scoring for Colgate at the 31-minute mark, as she lofted a high shot over two Big Red defenders. Cornell’s keeper quickly started to back up but the ball sailed over her head and into the net. Senior
Megan Bergman (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman
Liz Polido (Stow, Mass.) were credited with the assists.
The Raiders dominated the game offensively with 17 shots to the Big Red’s six. Colgate also had a hefty advantage in corner kicks, taking 11 to Cornell’s four.
Junior
Brittany Pearsall (LaGrange, Ill.) made two stops to improve her record to 4-1 on the season. Swensen made three stops for Cornell.
The Raiders enhance their record to 8-2 on the season, while the Big Red drop to 1-6-1.
Colgate begins its Patriot League schedule on Saturday, Sept. 30 when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to take on the Bison at 7 p.m.
