WEST POINT, N.Y. (09/22/2006)—The Colgate University volleyball fell to Patriot League foe Army, 3-0, in its conference opener this evening at Gillis Field House. Sophomore
Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif.) led the Raiders with eight kills.
The Black Knights proved to be too much for Colgate dropping the visiting Raiders in three straight games, 30-11, 30-19, 30-20. Colgate falls to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play, while Army improves to 11-2 and 2-0 in the conference.
Freshman
Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) added six kills and picked up 12 digs. Rookie
Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wis.) provided 18 assists and sophomore libero
Jackie Adlam (Mill Valley, Calif.) had a team-best 18 digs.
Army was led by Elizabeth Lazzari’s match-high 16 kills and freshman setter Maureen Bannon’s 43 assists. Anne Fields and Jamie Clark both added nine kills apiece, while Eileen Cassidy made a team-high 16 digs and served up five aces. The Black Knights hit .346 and had a total of 25 blocks to hold the Raiders to a .000 hitting percentage.
Army jumped all over the Raiders in the opening game, taking a 6-1 lead. The Black Knights expanded the lead to 17-3 after a 10-0 run and never looked back, winning 30-11.
The Raiders came out strong in the second game, battling with Army through the first half of the contest. Leading by just one at 13-12, Army took over, scoring nine of the next 10 points for a 22-13 lead. The Black Knights pushed that lead to as many as 12 to win 30-19.
The third and final game of the match proved to be much of the same. The Raiders trailed by just two, 12-10, but could not hand on as Army pulled away with an 8-2 run for a 20-12 lead.
The Raiders hit the court again tomorrow, Sept. 23, traveling to Worcester, Mass. for a meeting with Holy Cross. The Crusaders fell to Bucknell this evening by a score of 3-0.
