EVELETH, Minn. (9/14/06) – Former Colgate University hockey player Mike Milbury ’74 will be inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 7, in St. Paul, Minn.

Milbury spent the last 35 years in the sport as a player, coach and general manager. He lettered three times as a Raider, and finished his college career with 61 points, including 55 assists, in 76 games. After graduation, Milbury became the first player in school history to sign a free-agent contract with a National Hockey League team when he inked a deal with the Boston Bruins.

Milbury spent his entire NHL career in Boston, where he played in 754 games and racked up 238 points. He went on to become the head coach of the Bruins, where he coached such hockey legends as Cam Neely and Ray Bourque. Milbury led Boston to the Stanley Cup finals during the 1989-90 season, and later became an assistant general manager for the club.

In 1995, Milbury joined the New York Islanders as head coach and general manager. He continued as the Islanders’ GM through 2006, when he stepped aside to become a senior vice president for team owner Charles Wong’s sports properties.

Gary Gambucci, who played for the University of Minnesota, four U.S. national teams, and the NHL’s Minnesota North Stars, as well as the late Milton “Curly” Brink, a Minnesota hockey legend who died in 1999 at age 88, will also be inducted. Milbury is the first Colgate player to ever be inducted into the Hall.
