HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/12/06) – Colgate University head women’s lacrosse coach Heather Bliss announced the hiring of Jo Mooney as the program’s assistant coach on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Mooney rejoins Bliss at Colgate after serving as her assistant coach at Davidson during the 2005-06 academic year.
“I am extremely excited to have Jo join my coaching staff,” Bliss said. “Jo’s enthusiasm for the game and great success as a Division I player are just two of the invaluable qualities she will bring to our team. Jo was an outstanding defender for Vanderbilt and will bring a wealth of knowledge to our defensive corps.”
Prior to her time at Davidson, Mooney worked at the Caterham School in England as the girls’ lacrosse coach and a graduate assistant in the physical education department. In that role, she coached 12 lacrosse teams at the elementary, middle and high school level, and assisted in teaching physical education classes.
Mooney was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse at Vanderbilt where she captained the 2004 team to a berth in the NCAA tournament semifinals. Off the field, Mooney volunteered at the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and at the Margaret Cunninggim Women’s Center.
In 2003, Mooney co-founded the Nashville Girls’ Summer Lacrosse League in Nashville, Tenn., where she helped organize, promote and provide instruction for the area’s first girls’ lacrosse league. She also gained coaching experience as a counselor at the Gerstung Summer Camp in her hometown of Baltimore in 2002.
Mooney graduated from Vanderbilt in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
