Kennedy Leads Raiders at Harry Lang Invitational

Junior Elizabeth Kennedy led Colgate to third place of eight teams at its home invite.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (9/1/2006)—The Colgate University women’s cross country team grabbed two of the top six spots to take third of eight teams in the annual Harry Lang  6k Cross Country Invitational this evening. Junior Elizabeth Kennedy (Towaco, N.J.) led the way for the Raiders in fourth place with a time of 23:24, dropping over a minute off her time in 2005.
 
Navy won the overall competition with a low score of 17 points, while Syracuse took second with 37 points. Colgate was right on the Orange’s heels with 40 points.
 
Navy’s Justine Whipple won the overall 6k event with a time of 22:57, outrunning runner-up Diana Purtz from Vermont by just five seconds. The Midshipmen grabbed two of the next three places to secure the overall team victory.
 
Senior Liz Crowley (West Simsbury, Conn.) finished strong, outrunning Syracuse competitor Meghan Rowcliffe by just one second to finish sixth overall with a time of 23:44. Junior Kathryn Marvel (Williamsburg, Mass.) was next across the line for the Raiders, turning in a time of 24:16 for 14th place overall.
 
Senior captain Meaghan McAnaney (Syracuse, N.Y.) and sophomore Kristen Kiraly (Huntington, N.Y.) rounded out Colgate’s top five runners, hitting the tape in 24:22 and 25:02, respectively.
 
In the 4200-meter competition, it was Lafayette edging Navy for the team title with just 25 points. The Mids had 26 to earn the runner-up spot.
 
Vermont’s Aly Millet won the 4200-meter race in 17:09, while Lafayette’s Lindsay Bryant was second with a time of 17:22.
 
Freshman Emily Oliver (Annapolis, Md.) paced the Raiders with a time of 18:13. Classmate Susan Fortkiewicz (Bloomfield, N.J.) was next in line for Colgate, finishing the short course in 18:29.
 
Colgate runs again on Sept. 9 at the Binghamton Invitational. That race is set to go off at 11 a.m.
