Anton Leads Raiders to 2-0 Victory over St. Bonaventure

Junior forward Eric Anton scored one goal and added an assist to give Colgate a 2-0 win over St. Bonaventure.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (8/26/06) – Junior forward Eric Anton (Tahoma, Wash.) led the Raider attack with one goal and one assist as the Colgate University men’s soccer team shut out St. Bonaventure 2-0 in the season opener at Van Doren Field.

Anton battled with a defender just outside the box on the left side of the field.  St. Bonaventure (0-1-0) goalkeeper Ken Lish came out to assist as Anton picked up the ball and pivoted to the right, sending a low shot to the back of the net at 75:56.

Devin Deane (Oswego, N.Y.) made it 2-0 Colgate with just under six minutes remaining in the contest.  Deane picked up a cross from Anton on the right side and put the ball away with a shot to the right corner pocket at 84:01.

The first half was played scoreless with only one shot on goal being taken by St. Bonaventure.  With 10 minutes remaining, the Colgate opportunities came fast and furious but the Raiders couldn’t put anything on goal.  Freshman Alex Weekes (Stroudsburg, Pa.) came off the bench and sent two shots just high of the crossbar, and junior Dan Belke (West Bloomfield, Mich.) had a chance with a header than skimmed just wide.  Anton had his first look at the goal but a long reach by Lish squashed his effort.

David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.) came up with a big save in the second half for Colgate has he leaped to his left side to get a grip on a shot by St. Bonaventure.

Cappuccio made two saves in the contest, while St. Bonaventure’s Lish did not make any.

The Raiders will be back in action this Tuesday, Aug. 29 when they host Binghamton at 7 p.m.
