HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/9/06) – Freshman
Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL) went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead Colgate to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Army in the first game of a Patriot League doubleheader at the Eaton Street Field Sunday. Army came back in the nightcap to gain a split with a 6-4 decision.
Colgate is 10-13 overall and 3-3 in the Patriot League, while Army is 11-22 and 4-2.
In the opener, Colgate found itself trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the seventh. With two outs,
Kim Olmstead (Spring Hill, FL) singled, and moved to second on a single by
LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX). Olmstead came home on a RBI single by
Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR), and Albert raced to third. Rowe brought Albert home with the winning run on a single to center.
Colgate had a 3-0 lead after three innings, scoring its first run in the opening inning on Albert’s RBI double. The Raiders scored twice more in the third on a two-run double by Rowe.
Army scored once in the fifth and sixth innings to trail 3-2 entering the seventh inning. The Cadets scored twice for a 4-3 lead on a single by Lindsey Gerheim, and later, Gerheim coming home on a double steal.
Kate Howard (Wheaton IL) (9-6) was the winning pitcher for the Raiders, allowing eight hits, four runs, striking out six and walking four. Veronica Barth (4-11) took the loss.
Rowe finished with three hits, while Olmstead, who had her 100th career hit, and Albert had two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Army touched Colgate starter
Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS) for a run in the first inning, but the Raiders came back to tie the contest in the second inning on an unearned run.
The Cadets scored four unearned runs in the fifth inning off Rowe, who replaced Nordstrom on the mound. Nordstrom, who was making her second appearance since the Florida trip when she injured her shoulder, worked the first four innings.
Nordstrom, who retired the last nine batters she faced, was working on a limited pitch count. She allowed one hit while striking out two and walking none.
Colgate scored its second run in the sixth inning on
Kortney Hannah's (Vacaville, CA) RBI ground out. Army scored once more in the seventh inning, before Colgate plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Jessi Bentovoja (El Dorado Hills, CA) led off the inning with a walk, and later scored on a pass ball. Later,
Meg Mylan (Upper Montclair, NJ), who double, scored on a RBI ground out by
Calla Yee (Salinas, CA).
Mylan had a pair of hits for the Raiders, while Scott extended her hitting streak to 13 straight games with a single in the sixth inning.
Colgate and Army will play another doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m. to conclude the four-game series.
