Meg Mylan (Upper Montclair, NJ) cracked her first two home runs of the season to lead Colgate to a Patriot League doubleheader sweep over Holy Cross Saturday at the Eaton Street Field.
Colgate (15-22 overall, PL 8-10) came-from-behind in both games, winning the opener 6-5, before taking the nightcap, 7-6, in eight innings. The Raiders snap a seven-game losing streak and move into a three-way tie for third place in the standings. Holy Cross falls to 9-33 overall and 4-14 in the league.
Mylan was 2-for-7 with five runs batted in, while
LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) finished 3-for-7 with two RBI, one double and one triple for the Raiders.
In the opener, Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Natalie Cruz’s RBI ground, before the Raiders tallied twice in the second. Mylan drilled her first homer over the right field fence, after
Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA) had doubled with two outs.
Colgate increased its lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning when pinch runner
Brandi Godfrey (Eastman, CA) scored on
Whitney Scott’s (Beaverton, OR) ground out. The Crusaders scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning for a 4-3 lead, but Colgate tied the contest in the bottom half of the inning when
Kim Olmstead (Spring Hill, FL) walked with the bases loaded.
HC came right back in the seventh inning when Megan Lally homered with two outs to give the Crusaders a 5-4 lead. Albert led off the seventh with a single for the Raiders, and after moving to second on
Ashley Rowe’s (Tampa, FL) sacrifice bunt, scored on
Kortney Hannah’s (Vacaville, CA) single. Hannah moved to third when Tyeskey reached on an error, and came home with the winning run on Mylan’s RBI bunt.
Kate Howard (Wheaton, IL) had a complete game effort for the Raiders picking up her 12
th win of the season. She allowed four hits, two earned runs, struck out five and walked one.
The nightcap saw the Raiders rally from a two-run deficit in the seventh inning, and then win the contest in the eighth inning.
Holy Cross took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on Lally’s two-run homer off Colgate starter
Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS). Colgate got one back in the third when Hannah scored on a pass ball, after she led off the inning with a double.
The Crusaders used a two-run homer by Kelly O’Neil for a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning. Again, Colgate came right back scoring three times in the fourth in tie the contest. Albert led off with a triple, and came home on Rowe’s single for the first run. Mylan then hit a two-run shot over the center field fence to tie the game.
HC scored twice more in the fifth on a double by Sheena Stangler, and single by Cruz. Trailing 6-4 in the final inning,
Jessi Bentovoja (El Dorado Hills, CA) was hit by a pitch to start the rally. With one out, she moved to second on an error that gave the Raiders runners on first and second. Then with two outs, Albert had a two-run double to tie the game.
In the eighth inning, Tyeskey walked, and moved to second when Mylan was hit by a pitch. Tyeskey scored the winning run, when Hannah reached first on a throwing error that rolled down the right field line.
Nordstrom (2-4) allowed five hits, while striking out six and walking five for the win.
Colgate and Holy Cross will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12 noon.
