HAMILTON, N.Y. (4/19/06) – The Colgate men’s hockey team has added three more recruits to its class of 2010, the coaching staff announced on Wednesday, April 19.
Sean Carty (Chicago, Ill.),
Ethan Cox (Richmond, B.C.) and
Charles Long (Cleveland, Ohio) will begin lacing up their skates as Raiders starting with the 2006-07 season.
Carty is a 6-5, 220-pound center. He spent last season playing for the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., where he recorded nine goals and seven assists in 17 games. The Rhinos finished second among New England prep schools this season, falling to Salisbury in the championship game, 4-3. Taft was the co-champions of the Founders League. The Rhinos finished the year with a 21-5 record.
“Sean Carty is a very large physical presence with soft hands and a good scoring touch,” Colgate assistant coach Brad Dexter said. “Sean is a real character kid who, with time, should develop into a strong power forward.”
Cox is a 5-10, 180-pound right winger. He comes to the Raiders from Powell River of the BCHL. This season, Cox racked up 84 points in 64 games for the Kings. He scored 41 goals and added 43 assists, while accumulating 65 penalty minutes. He ranked 16th in the BCHL in scoring during the regular season. In the Kings’ five playoff games, Cox averaged two points per game. His 10 playoff points ranked 10th in the BCHL. Cox’s Powell River Kings were eliminated from the playoffs by the Chilliwack Chiefs, who produced current Raiders Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) and Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.).
“Ethan Cox is a very good skater,” Colgate assistant coach Andrew Dickson said. “He’s an up-and-down winger with a scoring touch. Ethan is the kind of player who is very aware of both ends of the ice, and he plays with grit and a high level of passion.”
Long is a 5-11, 180-pound goaltender who played for the Brockville Braves of the CJHL last season. Current Colgate freshmen Tom Riley (Nepean, Ont.) and David Sloane (Ambler, Pa.) played for Brockville before coming to Hamilton. Long played in 35 of Brockville’s 59 games during the 2005-06 regular season. He posted a 17-13-2 record along with a 3.04 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. Long has improved his numbers during the ongoing CJHL playoffs. He has appeared in five of the Braves’ first six playoff games, including four starts. In the playoffs, Long helped Brockville take the Nepean Raiders to seven games before losing in the division semifinals. Long posted a 2.96 goals against average and a .909 save percentage in the series.
“Charles Long is a technically-sound goaltender,” Dickson said. “His size and positioning placed Charles among the best of all junior goaltenders.”
The trio joins David McIntyre (Pefferlaw, Ont.) and Jason Williams (Plattsburg, N.Y.), who committed to Colgate during the early signing period. The members of the class of 2010 will see their first intercollegiate action at the 2006 Ice Breaker Tournament, Oct. 6-7, at Miami (Ohio). The Raiders will play former league-mate Vermont in the inaugural game at Miami’s new Goggin Ice Center to open the season. Recent two-time national champion Denver is the fourth team in the tournament, which is sponsored by the Hockey Commissioners’ Association.
