WASHINGTON, D.C. (4/16/06) - The Colgate women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to American on Sunday, April 16. It was the Raiders' third straight match of the weekend and final regular-season match.
Colgate (9-8, 2-3 PL) began the match winning the doubles point, taking No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Lindsay Grossman and Erin Fenn# won at No. 2, defeating Brandi Klingman and Merrisa Hollinger 8-3. Cameron Thaney and Kate Serrurier topped Casey Coleman and Alison Schmidt at No. 3 singles with an 8-6 victory.
The Raiders were unable to hang on to the lead, as the Eagles won four of the six singles matches. Grossman and Lauren Levy came out on top for Colgate, winning at No. 3 and No. 6. Grossman defeated Ali Harrison in two sets, 6-1, 6-3 and Levy topped Brynne Ward, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
With just one league match remaining between Army and Lafayette the Raiders are assured a place in the Patriot League Tournament. Army has already clinched the right to host as the top seed and if they win Colgate is guaranteed the fourth seed. If Lafayette upsets Army, the Leopards and Raiders will be tied with a 2-3 conference record but Colgate would advance because of the head-to-head win.
The Patriot League Tournament begins next weekend, April 22 in West Point.
