DENVER, Colo. (03/04/2006)—The Colgate University men’s lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season, 14-5, to No. 15 Denver this afternoon at Barton Stadium. The Raiders fall to 2-1 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 3-1 overall.
Denver jumped all over Colgate in the first half of the opening quarter, scoring four unanswered goals to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. The Raiders responded with three unanswered to make it a one-goal game at the 14:00 mark of the second period.
Junior attacker Rob Ryan (Manhasset, N.Y.) starting the scoring for Colgate with 5:19 left in the first off an assist from senior Robert Trasolini (New Hyde Park, N.Y.). Trasolini got a score of his own with 46 ticks left in the stanza, firing home a pass from Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) to send Colgate into the first break down 4-2.
Freshman Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) pulled the Raiders within one a minute into the second frame with his third tally of the season. It was all Denver after that as the Pioneers scored the next four goals, including three consecutive from Brad Richardson, of the half for an 8-3 lead at the break.
Richardson led all scorers in the game with four goals, while Todd Ruport contributed three points (1-2) for Denver.
Denver stretched the lead to 9-3 with an unassisted strike from Geoff Snider at the 13:14 mark of the third quarter. Senior Brian Robinson (Denver, Colo.) got on the board for the Raiders in his homecoming six minutes later, but the Pioneers scored the next five goals to ice the victory.
Corp rounded out the Raiders’ scoring with 5:58 left in the game off an assist from Lalli. Corp finished with a team-high two goals, while Lalli and Trasolini both had two points.
Senior goaltender Andrew Jarolimek (Silverthorne, Colo.) made 14 stops in 60 minutes of action and picked up one groundball. Jeb Hollingworth and Austin Konkel combined for 13 saves for Denver.
The Pioneers held a 51-29 advantage in shots and dominated the groundball game, picking up 51 to Colgate’s 21. Junior Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) went 8-of-20 from the faceoff X.
Snider was outstanding at the faceoff circle for Denver, winning 14-of-23 and picking up 12 groundballs.
The Raiders return to Tyler’s Field for their next contest on March 9 against Canisius. Colgate and the Golden Griffins faceoff at 7 p.m.
