PHILADELPHIA, PA (3/26/06) – Senior right-hander Kate Howard (Wheaton, IL) became Colgate’s second all-time strikeout leader, and third all-time leader in career wins, while leading the Raiders to a doubleheader split against the University of Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon.
Colgate (7-10) won the opener 5-3 behind Howard, before dropping a 6-5 decision in the nightcap.
With four strikeouts, Howard passed Elena Isaac into second place all-time with 294 and picked up her 40th career victory.
The Raiders jumped on Penn starter Emily Denstedt for five runs in the first inning. LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) opened the game with a double, and after moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, she scored on Whitney Scott’s (Beaverton, OR) single. Scott advanced to third on a double by Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL), and after Vicky Ortengren (Colorado Springs, CO) walked all three runners scored on a bases loaded double by Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA). Tyeskey later scored on a passed ball.
Penn got its first run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Julia Cheney, and scored again in the third inning on Kaelin Ainley’s home run. The Quakers’ final run came in the seventh inning on a double by Annie Kinsey.
Howard (6-4) allowed nine hits, while striking out four and walking one.
In the second game, home runs by Rowe and Ortengren wouldn’t be enough, as the Quakers rallied for the win.
Colgate took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Rowe’s two-run homer – her second round-tripper of the season. Ortengren homer in the fourth inning to increase the advantage to 3-0. It was Ortengren second HR of the season.
Penn scored four times in the fourth inning with the most damage done on a three-run homer by Brandi King. Colgate came right back a tied the contest 4-4 in the fifth inning on Rowe’s RBI double, but Penn broke the deadlock with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Stephanie Reichert leadoff with a homer, and King had a RBI single.
Colgate closed to within one run in the sixth inning on Erin Hanna’s (Tucson, AZ) RBI single.
Rowe started on the mound for the Raiders, pitching three innings, before senior Kim Olmstead (Spring Hill, FL) worked the final three innings. Olmstead (0-1) was making her first appearance in the circle for the Raiders.
Rowe was 2-for-4 with three RBI, while freshman Calla Yee (North Salinas, CA) had a pair of hits.
Colgate will open its Patriot League on Saturday, April 1 at Bucknell with a doubleheader.
