EMMITSBURG, MD (3/25/06) – The Colgate softball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday at the Mount St. Mary’s Tournament. The Raiders dropped the opener against Coppin State 7-6, before the host school came away with a 6-0 win in the second contest.
Colgate (6-9) will play a doubleheader against the University of Pennsylvania on Sunday to conclude its four-game road trip.
In the opener, Christen Glascoe hit a three-run homer over the left field fence in the sixth inning to give the Eagles a come-from-behind win.
Colgate took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning with a pair of two-run homers which were the first of the year for the Raiders. Freshman Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL) hit her first collegiate home run over the centerfield fence scoring Whitney Scott (Beaverton, OR), who led off the inning with a double. Then with one out, Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA) single, and after she stole second, freshman second baseman Vicky Ortengren (Colorado Springs, CO) lined a homer to left field.
Coppin scored four more runs in the sixth inning for a 5-4 lead with Glascoe’s blast the big hit. Then in the seventh inning they scored two more runs for a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Colgate scored twice to cut the deficit to 7-6 on Scott’s RBI sacrifice fly and Rowe’s RBI double. The Raiders had the tying run on second base with one out but couldn’t tie the contest.
LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and one run scored, while Scott, Rowe and Ortengren had two hits apiece.
In the second game, Mount St. Mary’s scored all its runs in the first two innings behind Maria Lutz’s shutout pitching. The Mount scored their first run in the opening frame on Danyale Goode’s RBI single, and then tallied five times in the second inning.
Colgate managed only four hits on singles by Scott, Meg Mylan (Upper Montclair, NJ) and Calla Yee (Vacaville, CA), and a pinch hit double by Jessi Bentovoja (El Dorado Hills, CA).
