Colgate Softball Defeats Cleveland St; Loses Against Yale

OSCEOLA, FL (3/14/06) – For the third straight time, the Colgate softball team (5-4) split a pair of games at the Rebel Games in Florida.  The Raiders snapped Cleveland State’s six-game winning streak in the opener with a 3-1 win, before dropping the nightcap against Yale, 4-1.
 
In the opener, Colgate received a strong pitching performance from senior Kate Howard (Wheaton, IL), who picked up her fourth win in five decisions.  She allowed one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking one.
 
Cleveland State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Christa Coppus drilled a shot over the left field fence.  Colgate scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning off Viking starter Kortney Spidell (4-1).  With two outs, Kim Olmstead (Spring Hill, FL) doubled to left center, and moved to third on a single by Kortney Hannah (Vacaville, CA).  Hannah went to second on a throw to the plate.  The next batter Ashley Rowe (Tampa, FL) singled to right field, scoring Olmstead and Hannah.  Rowe advanced to second on a play at the plate, and then came home on Whitney Scott’s (Beaverton, OR) RBI single.
 
LaPorscha Albert (Lewisville, TX) had a pair of hits for the Raiders including a double, while Scott was 2-for-3.
 
In the nightcap, Yale (10-4) jumped on top 3-0 in the second inning when designated player Deanna DiBernardi rocketed a three-run homer over the left field fence off Colgate starter Kelsey Nordstrom (Salina, KS).
 
The Bulldogs added a fourth run in the third inning, when Courtney Blachford scored on a line drive out by Kyli Hanson.
 
Colgate manufactured its only score in the fifth inning.  Scott led off with a single to left field extended her hitting streak to eight straight games.  Scott advanced to second on a single by Tiana Tyeskey (Granite Bay, CA).  Both players moved up a base on Jessi Bentovoja’s (El Dorado Hills, CA) sacrifice bunt, and Scott scored on a RBI single by Calla Yee (Salinas, CA).
 
Nordstrom (1-2) worked three and one-third innings allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out three and walking three.  Rowe pitched the rest of the way for the Raiders giving up no hits, walking one and striking out none.
 
Colgate will be back in action on Wednesday with games against George Washington and Rider.
