CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (2/18/06) - The No. 9/10 Harvard University women’s ice hockey shut out Colgate, 3-0 on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Bright Hockey Center. Seniors led the Crimson appropriately on Harvard’s senior day, as Ali Boe made 25 saves in her 16th career shutout while Jennifer Raimondi led the Crimson offensively with a goal and an assist.
Harvard captain Carrie Schroyer got the Crimson on the score board early with a tally just 2:12 into the opening frame. With the puck tangled up on the boards just behind the Colgate net, Schroyer dug it out and skated up towards the net, turned to face Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) and shot past her glove to the lower left corner. Jennifer Sifers and Liza Solley were both credited with assists.
Colgate freshman Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta) had a breakaway opportunity seven minutes in but her shot bounced off of Boe and unfortunately for the Raiders landed in front of Boe and the goal line.
Hunt had two more breakaways and a one-on-one break in the second period, but Boe came out on top stopping all three shots to keep the Raiders’ lamp dim.
A Colgate player was called for a penalty but couldn’t touch up as the Harvard bench pulled Boe in favor of the extra attacker. Laura Brady took a shot through traffic that rebounded back out into play in front of the net and was batted in by Raimondi to give the Crimson the 2-0 lead at 8:10 of the second period. The last time the two squads played each other, on Jan. 7 at Starr Rink, it was freshman Jenny Brine that put away an extra-attacker goal.
Colgate’s penalty-killing unit was strong as Harvard went 0-for-7 on the power play through 59 minutes. The Crimson finally capitalized with a man-advantage goal at 18:28. Positioned at the right circle, Raimondi sent a pass down up the ice to Jenny Brine who was waiting just outside the left side of the net and slide the puck past Wheeler. Lindsay Weaver was credited with the feed to Raimondi.
Shots were favor of the Crimson 20-7 in the first period, 22-10 in the second and 10-8 in the third.
Wheeler made 49 saves as Colgate fell to 10-13-7 and 7-8-3 in the ECACHL. Harvard is now 13-10-4 and 9-5-4 in the league.
Today’s game marked Colgate junior tri-captain Carly McNaughton’s (Lethbridge, Alta.) 100th career game.
Colgate returns to Starr Rink next weekend to play in a two-game series with Union in its final two regular-season contests. The Raiders and the Dutchwomen will face off on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m., and on Senior Day, Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m.
