HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/18/06) – Kendall Chones scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Colgate to a 63-60 win over Navy Saturday in a Patriot League game at Cotterell Court.
Colgate (9-17, PL 3-9) snapped a four-game losing streak while moving into a sixth place tie with Navy (10-15, PL 3-9) in the Patriot League standings.
Other Raiders in double figures were Jon Simon with 12 points, Jon Foss with 11 and Todd Checovich 10. Navy was led by Greg Sprink with 25 points, while Matt Fannin tallied 10.
Both teams had a poor-shooting performance with Colgate making 36.4 percent and Navy just 37 percent. The Raiders were 65.4 percent from the charity stripe (17-of-26), while Navy completed 16-of-19 for 84.2 percent.
In the rebounding department, Colgate held a slight edge 39-36. Besides Kendall Chones, the Raiders had three other players with five rebounds apiece – Kyle Roemer, Foss, and Alvin Reed.
Colgate took an early 14-5 lead in the contest before going ice-cold over the next 10 minutes. During the span, the Raiders managed only one free throw by Kendall Chones. Navy took full advantage of Colgate’s inability to find the basket outscoring the Raiders 18-1 for an eight-point lead 23-15 with 2:43 remaining in the opening half. Navy had a 28-22 halftime lead.
After the Midshipmen opened the second half with a basket, the Raiders went on an 11-2 run jumping out to a one-point lead. Colgate took the lead on a layup by Kendall Chones with 13:06 left.
Navy came back to take a 40-35 lead before Colgate went on a 10-0 run led by Checovich with eight points. Navy immediately answered the challenge with eight straight points to recapture a 48-45 lead with 6:52 remaining.
For the third time in the second half, the Raiders rallied to take a lead moving ahead 52-51 when Kendall Chones made a layup with 2:51 left. One minute later with the score tied 55-55, the Raiders took over with five straight points. Kendall Chones had an old-fashion three-point play, and Foss added a pair of free throws.
Navy closed to within two points on a couple of occasions before Foss made a free throw with 14 seconds left to give the Raiders the victory.
GAME NOTE: Colgate played the final 9:27 without leading scorer Kyle Roemer, who left the game with what appeared to be a concussion.
