SANTA CLARA, CA (12/28/06) – Danny Pariseau scored 11 points and John Bryant added 10 to lead Santa Clara (10-4) to a 53-39 win over Colgate in the first round of the 40th annual Cable Car Classic at Leavey Center.
Colgate (5-6) will play George Washington University in the consolation game on Friday at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
Other leading scorers for the Broncos were Calvin Johnson with 10 and Sean Denison with eight. Colgate was led by junior forward
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) with 11 points, while
Trevaron Vinson (Grand Prairie, TX) had seven,
Alex Woodhouse (Alexandria, VA) six and
Peter Minchella (West Lafayette, IN) five.
Colgate came out strong moving out to a 10-7 lead with under 13 minutes left in the opening half, but went scoreless over the next six minutes while the Broncos ripped off nine straight points. After
Kendall Chones stopped Santa Clara’s run with a jumper, the Broncos went on another nine-point run for a 13-point lead. Vinson tallied a pair of free throws, but a pair of 3-pointers by Johnson gave Santa Clara its biggest lead of the half, 31-14.
Woodhouse scored on a layup, and
Willie Morse (State College, PA) made two free throws to close out the first half scoring with Colgate trailing 31-18.
In the second half, Santa Clara was able to extend its lead back to 17-point, 43-26, with 11 minutes remaining. Colgate rallied with nine straight points behind four by Woodhouse and three from Minchella to cut the deficit to 43-35 with 3:26 left. Santa Clara closed out the scoring with a 10-4 to seal the victory.
