CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (12/21/2006)—Kathrin Ress had a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead Boston College to an 81-55 win over Colgate University in women’s basketball action at the Conte Forum. Freshman
Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) led the Raiders with a career-high 13 points.
Colgate falls to 1-10 overall, while Boston College improves to 8-3 on the year.
Boston College jumped all over the Raiders, 11-0, in the opening four minutes. The Raiders got a basket from sophomore
Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) to stop the run and kept the Eagles in sight for the rest of the half.
The Eagles looked like they were about to run away with the game with a 30-15 lead at the four-minute mark, but Colgate went on a 10-1 run over the next two minutes to make it a six-point game at, 31-25. The Raiders got baskets from five different players during that two-minute stretch of scoring.
Following a thirty second timeout by Boston College, the Eagles came back and scored the final three points of the opening 20 minutes to head into the locker room up eight points, 34-25.
Boston College started the second half the way it started the game, opening the lead to 22 points within the first four minutes of the frame. The Eagles held Colgate without a basket for over four minutes after the Raiders hit a free throw at the 18:46 mark.
The Eagles continued to knock down their shots, finishing the game shooting 50.8 percent from the field and 33 percent from long range.
Polinski added 10 points and five rebounds for the Raiders, while junior
Molly Patterson (Euclid, Ohio) had nine points in her season debut. It was the first action for Patterson since March 9, 2005.
Junior
Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) had six points and a team-high six rebounds for Colgate. The Raiders shot 41 percent from the field for the game and 41 percent from long range.
Boston College got 13 points from Elisabeth Engell and Mickel Picco to round out the scoring.
Colgate will take a weeklong break for the holidays before heading out to Iowa for the Iowa State Tournament. The Raiders kick off a three-game stretch in Ames on Dec. 28 against Iowa State at 7 p.m.
