Kendall Chones Scores 21 Points, But Harvard Comes Away With A 76-64 Win

Kendall Chones leads Colgate with 21 points.

HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/2/06) – Jim Goffredo and Brian Cusworth tallied 23 points apiece to lead Harvard to a 76-64 win over Colgate Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cotterell Court.

The Crimson (4-3) extends their winning streak to three straight games, while Colgate (3-3) has its two-game winning streak snapped.  Harvard has won three straight on Colgate’s home floor, and three straight in the series.

Drew Housman was also in double figures for Harvard with 12 points.  Colgate was led by Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) with a career-tying 21 points, while Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) had 14 points and Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) 12.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the field, but Harvard was 22-of-29 from the charity stripe while Colgate was only 6-of-12.  Colgate out-rebounded the visitors 32-27 led by Kendall Chones with a season-high seven.

The first half was a see-saw affair that had six lead changes, and the score tied four times.  With score tied at 16 apiece, Harvard put together a seven-point run to lead 23-16 with five minutes left.  Colgate battled back with eight straight points to take a 24-23 lead on Simon’s 3-pointer with 2:45 remaining.  After the lead exchanged hands a couple of times, Simon gave Colgate a 29-28 halftime lead with a jumper in the final seconds.

In the second half, Colgate held a 33-32 lead with 18:06 remaining, before Harvard scored eight straight points to take the lead for good.  Cusworth made a layup and two free throws for the first four points followed by Goffredo’s two free throws on a Colgate bench technical and a dunk by Cusworth.

Colgate came back to within three points, 49-46, with 10:36 remaining, but that would be as close as the Raiders would come with Harvard leading by as many as 13 points down the stretch.

GAME NOTES – Kendall Chones went over the 500-point mark in his career.  He has 509 points in 61 games … Waddy played 24 minutes but only nine in the first half, when he took his third foul with 6:52 remaining in the opening 20 minutes … Marc Daniels (Aurora, IL) fouled out with 6:58 left in the game … Colgate will be back in action on Wednesday night when the Raiders entertain Elmira College at 8:30 p.m.
