HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/16/2006)—Binghamton University used a 24-4 run in the final eight minutes of the first half to capture a 79-54 victory over host Colgate University in women’s basketball action this afternoon on Cotterell Court. The Bearcats had five players in double figures and were led by Erica Carter with a game-high 16 points.
Junior
Caitlin Gillard (Vestal, N.Y.) led all Colgate scorers with 12 points, while sophomore
Gretchen Polinski (Mansfield, Ohio) had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Colgate drops to 1-8 overall on the season, while Binghamton stops a five-game skid to improve to 3-7 overall.
The two teams got off to a fast start making the first eight shots of the game. The Bearcats and Raiders traded leads 10 times in the opening minutes and neither squad led by more than four points during that period.
Trailing, 20-19, at the 10:22 mark, Colgate used a 6-1 run over the next two minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 25-21 with eight minutes on the clock. Binghamton scored the next four points to tie the game and never looked back, holding Colgate off the scoreboard for over six minutes.
The Bearcats shot lights out in the first half, knocking down 64 percent of their shots from the floor, including 70 percent from behind the line. The Raiders shot 42 percent in the opening frame.
Binghamton scored the first basket of the second half and pushed the lead to 20 points in the opening 1:38 and cruised to the 25-point victory.
Briana Thompson added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bearcats, while Rebecka Lindgren had 11 points and nine boards. Juta Jahilo had 13 points and Laine Kurpniece completed the double-digit scorers with 11. Binghamton shot nearly 61 percent for the game and 67 percent from long range.
Freshman
TaHara Williams (Mason, Ohio) chipped in 10 points for the Raiders, while junior
Shevorne Martin (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had eight points and a career-high five assists. Colgate hit 33 percent of its shots from the floor and just seven percent from behind the three-point line.
Colgate hits the road to finish out the calendar year. The Raiders are back in action on Dec. 18 at Cornell at 7 p.m., and then again on Dec. 21 at Boston College.
