BETHLEHEM, PA (11/3/06) – Scott Hawkins scored in the 80th minute to lift the second seeded Lafayette men’s soccer team (11-4-1) to a 2-1 win over Colgate (8-4-5) in the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament Friday at Ulrich Sports Complex.
Lafayette advances to Sunday’s championship game against either #4 seed Bucknell or #1 seed Lehigh at 1 p.m.
The game-winning goal was a lower header by Hawkins, who directed a long centering pass by Steve Ference past Colgate goalie
David Cappuccio (Pittsford, NY) into the far corner of the net.
Colgate jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 5:32 left in the first half. Lafayette’s Anthony Sipe was called for a yellow card at midfield, and Colgate’s
Glenn Volk (Lexington, KY) sent the direct kick into the box, where
Eric Anton (Tacoma, WA) deflected the ball to
Justin Burney (Trabuco Canyon, CA), who beat Leopard goalie Scott Backus on the goal line for his first collegiate goal.
Lafayette tied the contest in the 58th minute, when Luke Sullivan scored on a header off a corner kick by Thomas Harju.
Cappuccio made five saves for the Raiders, while Backus finished with eight saves. Lafayette had a slight edge in shots, 17-16.
