Yale Defeats Colgate 2-1 In ECACHL Opener

NEW HAVEN, CT (11/3/06) - The Colgate men's hockey team opened its ECACHL season losing on the road against Yale 2-1 Friday night at Ingalls Rink.

Yale remains undefeated through its first three games under new head coach Keith Allain.  The Bulldogs have wins over top ranked New Hampshire and ECAC preseason favorite Colgate.

Chasing a goal in the third stanza, Yale took advantage of one its five power plays in the period. Freshman Sean Backman was on the receiving end of a Patrick Brosnihan feed in front and fired a shot high over the glove of Raiders goaltender Mark Dekanich to knot the score at 1-1.  Jean-Francois Boucher - who played a solid game all night in front of the Colgate goal - picked up the second assist on the goal.

At the 7:00 mark of the third, freshman Tom Dignard fired a pass up ice to a streaking Michael Karwoski, who held up at the top of the circle to set up the play. Karwoski found a streaking Matt Nelson, who ripped a wrister past Dekanich, and lifted the crowd of 3,018 out of their seats.
Colgate (3-4-1, 0-1-0 ECACHL) took a one goal lead in the second period when Jason Williams snapped a shot between the legs of Bulldogs netminder Alec Richards on the power play. Mark Anderson and Tom Riley added assists on the goal.

In the game, Richards stopped 23 shots for his third victory of the season while Dekanich made 22 saves. Yale was 1-11 on the power play while Colgate was 1-10. The Bulldogs managed to kill off three 5-on-3 situations in the game.

The Raiders are back into action Saturday night against Brown in Providence, R.I.
