HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/3/06) – The Colgate University women’s hockey team took a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period but couldn’t hang on for the win as No. 3 Mercyhurst scored the next three goals to take a 4-2 game at Starr Rink on Friday, Nov. 3.
Tara French (Truro, N.S.) put the Raiders on the scoreboard at 6:38 when teammate
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) won a draw deep in the zone and slid the puck back to French. French rifled a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that found its way through traffic and past netminder Laura Hosier.
Under a minute later Mercyhurst’s Meghan Agosta evened the game when she scored on the doorstep, lifting the puck to the upper left corner of the goal. Stefanie Bourbeau and Ashley Pendleton were credited with the assists.
Mercyhurst had an offensive outburst in the second stanza, recording two goals, to take a 3-2 lead.
Valerie Chouinard sent a cross-ice pass to Stephanie Jones, who hit the lower left side of the cage at 10:25 to even the scoring at 2-2.
Julie Colizza gave the Lakers the 3-2 lead minutes later when she collected the game-winning goal. Swinging around the back side of the goal Stefanie Bourbeau passed the puck to Colizza who was out front to put the puck away at 12:53.
Chouinard gave one-last effort for Mercyhurst when she tapped in a goal at 2:48 of the third frame. Colgate had just come off a successful penalty kill and settled back into the 5-on-5. A tough battle for the puck ensued along the right-side boards with Danielle Ayearst coming up with the puck. Ayearst made a short pass to Chouinard in front of the net for the final marker of the contest.
The Lakers outshot the Raiders 12-5 and 15-4 in the first two periods, before the shots were evened at nine apiece in the third.
Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) made 32 saves for Colgate, which falls to 2-5-1 on the season, while Mercyhurst’s Hosier stopped 16 shots to improve the Lakers’ record to 8-0-1.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 4 at 2 p.m.
