HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/22/06) – Chuck Harris scored eight of his 13 points in overtime to lift Canisius College (1-2) to a 78-73 overtime victory over Colgate (1-2) Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.
Canisius’ leading scorer was Corey Herring with 22 points, 17 in the first half, followed by Darnell Wilson with 14.
Kendall Chones (Cleveland, OH) and
Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) tallied 18 points apiece for Colgate, while
Daniel Waddy (Tucson, AZ) added 11, including nine for the free throw line.
Wilson’s layup with 2.1 seconds remaining send the contest into overtime tied at 66-66, after Colgate had taken a 66-64 lead in a basket by Chones and Waddy’s free throw with 17 seconds left.
The Raiders scored the first four points in overtime on four free throws by Waddy for a 70-66 lead, but Canisius came back with a 9-2 run behind six points by Harris for a 75-72 lead. After Chones made a free throw to cut the deficit to two points with 38 seconds left, Harris clinched the victory with a pair of free throws for 34 seconds left.
Canisius had a 39-33 lead at halftime behind 17 points by Herring, who made 15 of the last 17 points for the Griffs.
In the second half, Colgate came back to tie the game 45-45 on a dunk by Chones. From that point the lead see-sawed back-and-forth before Wilson tied the game 66-66 to send the contest into overtime.
Colgate made 47 percent of its field goal attempts including 3-of-9 from 3-point range. The Raiders were 30-of-40 from the free throw line.
