STORRS, Conn. (11/16/2006)—Connecticut University freshman Tina Charles posted 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the seventh-ranked Huskies to an 81-37 victory over Colgate University in women’s basketball action this evening at Gampel Pavilion. Sophomore guard
Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio) led the Raiders with 18 points and three assists.
Colgate falls to 1-2 overall with the loss, while UConn improves to 2-0.
Colgate grabbed an early 4-2 lead behind a pair of jumpers from
Melanie Cargle (Trotwood, Ohio), but it was a pair of Husky runs that put the Raiders down 49-17 at the break. Connecticut went on a 21-3 run that spanned nearly eight minutes to go ahead 23-7.
Freshman
Katie Garman (Poplar Grove, Ill.) stopped the run with a three on the next possession, but the Huskies responded with a 14-0 streak over six minutes to stretch the lead to 37-10 with 4:32 left to play.
Colgate shot 21.2 percent from the floor in the first half, while UConn hit 41.9 percent of its shots from the field. The Huskies had a 33-20 advantage on the glass after the first 20 minutes.
The second half was much of the same as the Huskies came at the Raiders in waves, pushing their lead to as many as 50 points. Cargle registered a strong second stanza for the Raiders, scoring 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
For the game, Colgate shot 20.9 percent from the floor, while the Huskies hit 44 percent of their shot. The Raiders held UConn without a three-pointer in the second half. Connecticut held a 61-36 edge on the boards, including grabbing 26 offensive rebounds.
Garman finished the game with six points and two rebounds for Colgate and sophomore
Becca Martin (Shaftsbury, Vt.) matched her career-high with five points.
UConn’s Mel Thomas added 15 points for the Huskies and Brittany Hunter and Renee Montgomery both had 12 points apiece. Hunter also pulled down 10 boards for the double-double.
The Raiders will take five days off before heading to Cleveland State on Nov. 21. Tipoff against the Vikings is set for 7 p.m.
