Colgate Posts First Win Over No. 4/5 Dartmouth in 2-1 Upset

Sophore Elin Brown scored Colgate's first game-winning goal over Dartmouth.

HANOVER, N.H. (Nov. 11, 2006) – Colgate University’s penalty-killing unit killed off a two-minute infraction with 2:37 remaining in regulation to secure a 2-1 upset victory over No. 4/5 Dartmouth at Thompson Arena on Saturday, Nov. 11.

It was Colgate’s (3-6-1, 3-1 ECACHL) first win over Dartmouth (4-3, 4-1 ECACHL) in the all-time series that favors the Big Green 15-1-1.

The Big Green controlled the puck the first half of the opening frame, taking 12 shots to Colgate’s 10.  The Raiders settled down midway through to put some pressure on the Dartmouth defense before Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) was able to sneak one to the back of the net.

Hunt put the Raiders on the scoreboard first when she went top shelf on netminder Carli Clemis at 11:38.   Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.) got the puck along the far boards and slid it back to Tara French (Truro, N.S.) at the point.  French moved the puck back up along the boards to Hunt who circled around before rifling a shot from the dot that went over the left shoulder of Clemis.  Hunt’s goal extended her scoring streak to seven games.

Dartmouth’s Marley McMillan answered back with her second goal of the season, after a scramble in front of the Colgate net.  Jenna Cunningham connected with Sarah Toupal who sent a shot towards the net that was saved by goalie Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) but not collected as it bounced around out front.  McMillan got a stick on it and flipped it over the goal line at 7:51 to end the first at a 1-1 deadlock.

The second stanza was scoreless with shots in the Big Green’s favor 12-2.  Hamashuk was solid between the pipes and had a shining moment when she stopped an odd-man rush and a Colgate defender ripped the puck down the length of the ice to prevent a second attempt as Hamashuk was recovering from the save outside the crease.

Brown scored the game-winning goal at 8:32 of the third period, seconds after a face off was taken in the Dartmouth zone.  Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) drew the puck to the near boards where it banged off the dashers and back to McNaughton who wheeled in around the net and centered the puck to Brown to light the lamp.

With under six minutes to play Dartmouth fired a shot that was stopped by Hamashuk but sat in the blue paint where it was swept away and down the ice by Tara French.  The goal judge flipped the light to signal a goal but the official being in the correct position kept the play going.

In the final few minutes Katie Weatherston put a scare in the Raiders when she walked through two defenders on her way to the net but couldn’t get a shot off as Kate Wolgemuth was called for hooking at 17:43.  Dartmouth pulled Clemis to skate 6x4 for the next two minutes and blasted Colgate with six shots, four of which were turned away by Hamashuk.  The Big Green maintained control of the puck for the final 37 seconds, after the penalty had expired, but Hamashuk was impressive making two more saves.

She made 32 total saves in her first win of the season, and Clemis stopped 15 for Dartmouth.

Colgate begins a four-game homestand on Friday, Nov. 17 when it hosts Quinnipiac at 7 p.m.  Princeton will visit Starr Rink on Saturday, Nov. 18 for a 4 p.m., contest.
