HAMILTON
, N.Y. (11/11/06) – Colgate junior Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) scored the only Raider goal in a 4-1 loss to Harvard on Saturday, Nov. 11, at Starr Rink. The win was the first league victory for the Crimson (2-4-0, 1-4-0 ECACHL) this season, while the Raiders drop to 3-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in league play.

Harvard took a 1-0 lead on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity, four minutes into a five-minute major penalty on Raider junior Mike Werner (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.). The Crimson worked the puck around the zone very quickly and closed in on the Colgate cage. Junior Jon Pelle passed to freshman Doug Rogers in the high slot, and let off a shot through traffic. Colgate freshman goalie Charles Long (Cleveland, Ohio) made the save, but the rebound came out to junior Mike Taylor, who shot into an open net at the 13:39 mark.

The Raiders tied it up exactly three minutes later. As Harvard tried to break out of its zone, junior assistant captain Jesse Winchester (Long Sault, Ont.) intercepted a pass in the neutral zone. He spun around, beat his defender on his way into the zone, and shot from the top of the left circle. The puck caught Harvard senior netminder Justin Tobe in the stomach, and the rebound fell to the ice, but a Crimson defender tipped it in.

Harvard took a 2-1 lead 11:07 into the second period. Junior Dave Watters stripped the puck from a Raider forward as he tried to break out of the zone. Watters threw the puck at the net and missed wide, but it bounced off the boards behind the net and came out to sophomore Jimmy Fraser on the opposite post. Fraser’s shot beat Long low, glove-side.

The Crimson’s third goal came from a Colgate turnover in the zone. The Raider defender fired the puck around the boards from behind the net in an attempt to clear, but J.D. McCabe stopped it just inside the blue line. He sent in a high shot from the right point which deflected off a Colgate player in front and floated over Long’s head, into the net.

Harvard capped the game’s scoring with its second 5-on-3 power-play goal of the night at the 12:47 mark of the final period. The Crimson worked the puck around the zone and up to their points. Sophomore Brian McCafferty passed across to senior Dylan Reese at the top of the slot. Reese shot low, and the puck was deflected by a Colgate skate into the stick-side corner of the net.

Long made 37 saves in his first career start. Tobe finished the game with 18 stops. Harvard outshot Colgate 41-19, including 14-3 in the third period. The Raiders, however, did earn the edge on faceoffs, 45-39.

The Raiders return to action next weekend at Quinnipiac and Princeton. Colgate will take on the Bobcats on Friday, Nov. 17, at 7:00 p.m., at the Northford Ice Pavilion. The next night, the Raiders will play the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. Both games can be heard live on the Colgate athletics website via TeamLine.
