Men's Basketball Drops Opener Against Stony Brook 65-59

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/10/06) – Mitchell Beauford scored 20 points, including six crucial free throws in the final 29 seconds, to lead Stony Brook (1-0) to a 65-59 win over Colgate Friday night at Cotterell Court.
 
Also in double figures for the Seawolves was Ricky Lucas with 20 points and Mike Popoko with 10.  Jon Simon (Phoenix, AZ) led Colgate (0-1) with 15 points.
 
Stony Brook jumped out to an early seven-point lead, 13-6, before the Raiders scored eight straight for a 14-13 advantage.  After falling behind, 17-16, with under five minutes remaining, Colgate again rallied to take the lead 21-17.
 
Colgate had a five-point advantage at halftime, 24-19.
 
The Raiders led 29-23 with 17:27 left, but Stony Brook scored 11 straight points to move in front 34-29.   The Raiders came back to within two points, 36-34, but Stony Brook outscored Colgate 19-6 to open a 55-40 lead with 4:19 remaining.
 
After going seven minutes without a basket from the field, Colgate rallied with 11 straight points to trail 55-51 with 1:15 left.  The Raiders were able to cut it to two points 61-59 with 16 seconds left, but Beauford sealed the victory with four straight free throws.
 
Colgate out-rebounded the Seawolves 31-28 led by Marc Daniels (Aurora, IL) with six and Simon with five.  Popoko was the leading rebounder for the visitors with six.
 
Colgate takes to the road for its next game on Nov. 18 at Dartmouth.
