CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (11/10/06) – Jenny Brine scored at 3:21 in overtime to give No. 8 Harvard University a 4-3 win over Colgate University in women’s hockey on Friday, Nov. 10 at Bright Hockey Center.
Sarah Wilson slid Brine the puck in center ice and Brine went stick side on Colgate netminder
Elayna Hamashuk (Nepean, Ont.) at 3:21 for the overtime victory.
It was the first time the two squads have played an extra session game since the first meeting in 2001, when the teams skated to a 1-1 draw.
Special teams were on display tonight with 58 penalty minutes being served by both squads. Both teams earned five-minute majors for hitting from behind and 10-minute misconduct penalties.
The Raiders outshot Harvard 14-9 in the first period, applying great pressure in the Harvard zone.
Mallory Johnston (Chatham, Ont.) had a wrist shot from the point that was followed by a chance by
Elin Brown (Calgary, Alta.).
Tara French (Truro, N.S.) had a nice shot on the doorstep but netminder Brittany Martin’s quick feet stopped the puck from crossing the goal line.
Hamshuk squashed an Amy Uber one-on-one attempt pushing the puck back out onto the ice, and another one-on-one by Liza Solley as Hamashuk flipped the puck over the top of the cage. They say 'third time is a charm' and it was for Harvard’s third one-on-one chance in the first frame. Skating man-down Harvard’s Katie Johnston picked up a give-away in the neutral zone as the Raiders were attempting a line change. Johnston went top shelf on Hamashuk for the 1-0 lead.
Colgate had a barrage of shots minutes later trying to even the game but couldn’t sneak the puck past Martin.
With a five-minute major accessed to French, Colgate’s top defender, with 29 seconds remaining in the first period, and a game misconduct, the Raiders would be challenged as the Crimson lead the nation in scoring offense.
But it was not a problem as Colgate killed off the five minutes and then showed its offensive prowess as
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) scored for the Raiders at 15:06, keeping her six-game scoring streak in tact.
Hunt went end-to-end and displayed great stick skills as she slipped the puck through the legs of a Crimson defender as she crossed over into the Harvard zone, picked up the puck on the other side, and went over the blocker of Martin. Defenders
Kate Wolgemuth (Anchorage, Alaska) and
Kiira Dosdall (Fairfield, Conn.) were credited with helping set up the Raider play.
Brine put Harvard up 2-1 at 7:34 with a power-play marker. Brine had scored all five of her goals this season, prior to the game-winner, on the man-advantage. Wilson brought the puck in off the boards to Brine who rifled a shot from the left face-off circle to the right side of the net. Johnson grabbed the second assist for her second point of the game.
The Raiders again had some notable chances in the second stanza by
Ali Edell (Madison, N.J.),
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.),
Carly McNaughton (Lethbridge, Alta.) and a shot off the post by Brown. Having another great period was Hamashuk, stopping 14 shots and coming up with a big save as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
Dosdall connected with Dombovy at 7:42 of the third period, to even the game and exactly three minutes later the Raiders took a 3-2 lead, just 12 seconds into a 5x3 opportunity. Dosdall ripped a shot that rebounded back out on the ice to the stick of Hunt who snuck it past Martin at 4:42.
Harvard crushed Colgate’s lead when they scored on the 4x4 with 3:22 remaining in regulation. Liza Solley sent a centering pass to Jennifer Sifers, but the puck missed her stick and deflected off her skate, surprising Hamashuk as the puck slipped though the five hole.
Hamashuk, playing in just her second game of her sophomore season, made 28 stops for Colgate, while Martin made 41 saves.
Colgate falls to 2-7-1 overall and 2-1 in the ECACHL, while Harvard improves to 4-1 on the season and in league play.
A special note, tonight’s game marked senior
Ashley Bradford’s (Burnaby, B.C.) 100th career game. Bradford and the Raiders will take on Dartmouth at Thompson Arena on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. Live video (cost) and live stats (free) will be available for the game.
