HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/10/06) – The Colgate men’s swimming and diving team earned 24 points in the final two events to overtake Dartmouth and earn a 126.5-114.5 win on Friday, Nov. 10, at Lineberry Natatorium.

Senior tri-captain Dave Hill (Prides Crossing, Mass.) won the 200 breast in a season-best time of 2:16.14 to earn his team nine points in the penultimate event. Junior Simon Rosen (Weston, Conn.) finished third with a time of 2:21.29 to earn three points, and sophomore Scott Dunlavey (Oak Park, Ill.) picked up another point with his fifth-place finish, touching the wall in 2:26.63.

The Raiders entered the final event of the day, the 800 free relay, leading 115.5-110.5, and needing a win to claim victory in the meet. The relay, composed of sophomore George Bennitt (West Chester, Pa.), senior Zach Grobengieser (Spencerport, N.Y.), freshman Cameron Voell (Little Silver, N.J.) and junior Jeff Jakob (Medford, N.J.) beat the Dartmouth quartet by more than six seconds, finishing in 7:16.66. Bennitt’s time of 1:49.22 in the lead-off leg was the best 200 free time posted by any Raider this season, and Grobengieser had the fastest split of the squad, 1:47.88, on the second leg of the race.

Colgate also won the meet’s opening relay, the 400 medley, by an 11-second margin. Senior Greg Dunlavey (Oak Park, Ill.) led off, and he was followed by Hill, junior Zach Whitman (Pittsford, N.Y.) and sophomore Dan Lathrop (Westerly, R.I.) as the foursome finished in 3:35.77.

 

The Raiders earned the top four finishes in the 50 free, led by Grobengieser, who finished in 22.00. Greg Dunlavey was second with a time of 22.22, Lathrop was third in 22.86, and sophomore Brian Kennedy (Summit, N.J.) was fourth in 23.18.

Whitman and Hill tied for the 200 IM title, both touching the wall at 2:01.00. Whitman later finished second to freshman teammate Robert Rutkowski (Lititz, Pa.) in the 200 fly, posting a time of 2:03.57 to Rutkowski’s 2:02.16.

Sophomore Stephen Haskin (Potomac, Md.) earned his second win of the season on the three-meter board, tying Dartmouth’s Dan Weisman with 218.03 points each. He finished second to the Big Green’s Andrew Berry in the one-meter event, scoring 238.05 points.

Bennitt earned second-place points in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.25. He was followed closely by Voell, who came in third in 1:49.73.

Grobengieser posted a second-place finish in the 100 free, just 0.27 seconds behind the winner in 48.29. Sophomore Rich McMahon (Middletown, N.Y.) was second in the 1000 free, coming just 0.01 shy of his season-best time of 10:28.93. Greg Dunlavey also earned second place honors in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:02.53.

Colgate is back in action next weekend at the Terrapin Cup Invitational, hosted by the University of Maryland.
