Bucknell Gets Past Colgate Volleyball, 3-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/06/2006)—Bucknell University junior Jenna Henderson compiled a match-high 23 kills and 10 digs to lead the Bison to a 3-0 victory over Colgate in Patriot League volleyball action this evening on Cotterell Court. Bucknell hit .290 for the match, while Colgate posted a .150 hitting percentage.
 
Colgate falls to 9-9 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League action with the 30-24, 30-25, 30-21 setback. Bucknell improves to 11-9 and 3-2 against conference opponents.
 
Sophomore Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif.) had a strong all-around match, posting a team-high 11 kills, 11 digs, and six assists. Freshman Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) added nine kills for Colgate and sophomore Merryl Pohl (Seattle, Wash.) had seven. Rookie setter Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wis.) handled the setting duties with 28 assists. Sophomore Jackie Adlam (Mill Valley, Calif.) picked up a team-best 14 digs.
 
The Raiders jumped out in front 4-1 to start the match, but the Bison responded with a 10-1 run to go in front 11-5. Bucknell built that lead to as many as eight at 15-7 and held strong down the stretch to win 30-24. The Bison hit .300 in the opening game and held the Raiders to just a .178 hitting percentage.
 
The second game was more of a back and forth battled as the teams shared six ties and three lead changes. The Bison looked like they were starting to pull away with a 16-12 advantage, but Colgate battled back to tie the game at 21. Henderson recorded a kill on the next point to put Bucknell in front for good at 22-21. The Bison scored the next three points and eight of the final 12 to capture the game 30-25.
 
The Colgate offense struggled in the final game, hitting just .051 percent. Bucknell once again used a streak midway through the game to take the match with a clinching 30-21 win.
 
Sarah Groman also had double-digit kills for Bucknell with 10 and Emilie Hardinge added eight in the outing. Shannon Pitsch provided a match-high 50 assists and libero Kristen Sydlowski picked up a match-best 20 digs. The Bison finished the match with eight team blocks.
 
Colgate returns to action on Oct. 13, hosting defending league champion American at 7 p.m., on Cotterell Court. The Raiders will take on rival Navy the following evening at 7 p.m.
