HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/29/06) – The Colgate field hockey team finished its season on a high note when it came back to beat upstate rival Cornell, 3-2, in double overtime on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Tyler’s Field. The Raiders finish their season with a 4-12 overall record, and the Big Red is 6-9.
At the 92:39 mark of the game, junior tri-captain
Natali Plesniarski (Hamilton, N.Y.) found the back of the cage from the right side of the circle to give the Raiders the win.
Cornell took an early lead, 7:37 into the game, when Brenna Gulotta took a pass from Abbi Horn and put it between Colgate senior goalie
Jacque DeMarco’s (Hudson, Ohio) legs.
Approximately 10 minutes before halftime, the Raiders were able to tie the game on a penalty corner goal. Plesniarski swept the ball in from the end line, and sophomore
Maddie Watrobski (Penfield, N.Y.) stopped it at the top of the circle before sophomore
Lauren Carey (Medfield, Mass.) swept it in for a goal.
Just 1:41 into the second half, Carey set up classmate
Amanda Gilmore (Chalfont, Pa.) for the go-ahead goal. Carey passed the ball to Gilmore from outside the circle, and Gilmore banged it home to make it 2-1 in favor of the Raiders.
Less than 90 seconds later, however, Cornell tied it up with a penalty corner goal. Belen Martinez scored off a set-up by Katie Bradshaw and Natalie Appleton. The goal held up for the rest of the half, forcing the teams to play extra minutes to decide the winner.
In her final game as a Raider, DeMarco
made eight saves to earn the victory. Cornell’s Shannon Prescott finished the game with 12 stops, half of which came during the overtime periods.
Colgate edged Cornell in shots, 17-16, including a 7-5 advantage in the overtime sessions. The Raiders had 12 penalty corners to Cornell’s 10.
