ALBANY, N.Y. (10/28/06) –
Colgate sophomore Peter Bogdanich (Burnaby, B.C.) scored the game-tying goal at the 8:48 mark of the third period to give the Raider men’s hockey team a 2-2 tie with Quinnipiac in the first game of the Governor’s Cup presented by Citizens Bank at the Pepsi Arena in Albany, N.Y., on Saturday, Oct. 28. He then went on to score the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout that advanced Colgate to the championship game on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.

After putting the game into the record books as a 2-2 tie, the teams went to a shootout to determine who would play for the inaugural Governor’s Cup title on Sunday. In the first round, after Quinnipiac’s Ben Nelson missed the net, junior assistant captain Tyler Burton (Langley, B.C.) beat QU goalie Bud Fisher top-shelf to give the Raiders a 1-0 advantage. Neither team scored in the next two rounds, but Bogdanich punched Colgate’s ticket to the title game when Bogdanich scored in the fourth round.

Bogdanich scored on a wrap-around from behind the net midway through the third to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Mike Campaner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) passed him the puck behind the net after receiving it from sophomore Tom Riley (Ottawa, Ont.), and Bogdanich walked around the left side to put it past Fisher.

Both teams finished the first period 1-for-4 on the power play. Colgate struck first, capitalizing on its second extra-man opportunity of the game, a 5-on-3 chance. The Raiders set up in the zone and starting passing the puck around. Sophomore Nick St. Pierre (St. Etienne, Que.) shot from the left point for his second power-play goal in as many games at the 8:44 mark. Riley and Burton assisted on the play.

Six minutes later, Quinnipiac responded with a power-play goal of its own. The Bobcats set up, and Dan Henningson got the puck low to Bryan Leitch on the right side of the crease. Leitch beat Colgate junior goaltender Mark Dekanich (North Vancouver, B.C.) top-shelf to tie the game at 1-1.

Late in the second period, Quinnipiac took the lead. Colgate was on the power play, and the Bobcats managed to clear the zone and skate the puck up-ice. A player from each team got tangled with referee Scott Hansen just inside the blue line, and QU’s Eric Lampe took the opportunity to get away from the back and earned a breakaway. He buried the puck into the corner of the net over Dekanich’s shoulder to make it 2-1 for the Bobcats.

Dekanich finished the game with 23 saves, including four during overtime, while Fisher made 25. Colgate held a slight edge in faceoffs, 36-32, with Burton winning 15 of his 24 attempts.

Sunday’s game marks the first time Colgate has played in the title tilt of a tournament since the 2000 Ice Breaker. In that tournament, the Raiders posted a 2-2 tie with Michigan and advanced with a 2-0 win in a shootout before losing to New Hampshire, 7-3 in the championship contest.

Colgate will face Rensselaer, who defeated Union in a shootout in the second semifinal. The game ended in a 3-3 tie, and Seth Klerer scored in the first round of the shootout to advance his Engineers. The Raiders will play them for the Governor’s Cup at 5:00 p.m., on Sunday.
