PROVIDENCE, R.I. (10/24/06) – Brown University upended Colgate University in men’s soccer, 3-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Stevenson Field.
The Raiders have not allowed three goals in a game since Oct. 22, 2005 against American, and prior to tonight’s game had allowed just five tallies this season.
Colgate, ranked No. 24 in the NSCAA/adidas poll, falls to 7-3-5; while Brown, ranked No. 26 by College Soccer News, improves to 10-3-3.
The Bears got on the scoreboard early with a goal by Jamie Granger at 1:38. Granger picked up an Andrew Daniels header and sent it past
Doug Litvack (Levittown, N.Y.) on the left side.
At 12:38 the clocked was stopped as Litvack sustained an injury and had to leave the contest. He was replaced by sophomore
David Cappuccio (Pittsford, N.Y.).
Brian Joyce put Brown up 2-0 with an unassisted marker at 23:17, as he rifled a shot from inside the box to the left corner pocket past Cappuccio.
Freshman
Chris Salmon (Auburn, Wash.) cut the lead back to 2-1 when he snuck the ball past Jarrett Leech at 31:05, marking his third goal of the season.
Darren Howerton’s flip throw-in on the right side found leading scorer Rhett Bernstein who knocked the pass in after a scramble in front of the net.
The Bears outshot the Raiders, 17-7 in the contest including an eight-shot margin of 11-3 in the first half.
Cappuccio who entered the game with a 0.11 goals against average, made five saves in just his second loss of the season. Starting keeper Litvack had one stop. Leech turned away two and replacement David Semenza made three saves.
The Raiders host Holy Cross in a Patriot League match-up on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., in the final home game of the season.
