HAMILTON, N.Y. (10/22/06) – University of New Hampshire’s power-play unit scored four goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Colgate University in women’s hockey on Sunday, Oct. 22 at Starr Rink.
Kacey Bellamy tallied two first-period goals to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Skating 5-on-4, the Wildcats worked the puck around deep in the zone and Bellamy wristed a shot from the high slot that went through traffic to the low corner at 9:45. Kelly Paton and Nicole Hekle were credited with the assists.
At the 18-minute mark, Paton won a face-off in the Colgate zone and sent the puck to Bellamy at the point where she one-timed it into the upper corner for the second power-play goal.
Colgate’s
Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) cut the lead to one with her first collegiate marker, and only even-strength goal of the contest, at 2:26 of the second session. After controlling the puck down low,
Sam Hunt (Calgary, Alta.) sent a pass to
Ashley Bradford (Burnaby, B.C.), who spun out of the corner and hit a wide open Stewart out in front. Stewart made a strong move to her backhand and pushed the puck under the blocker of UNH’s Lucy Schoedel.
Shannon Clement put UNH up 3-1 at the end of the second, with the Wildcats third man-advantage goal. Paton charged down the right wing side into the Colgate zone, after looking to shoot, she rifled a pass into the slot onto the stick of Clement. Clement sent the puck past a sprawling
Brook Wheeler (Brussels, Ont.) at 16:53 of the second.
With 3:04 remaining in regulation Jennifer Hitchock sealed the win for the Wildcats. After setting up in the Colgate zone, the UNH power-play moved the puck up high where Martine Garland took a hard wrist shot that was redirected in front by Hitchcock. Sadie Wright-Ward was credited with the feed to Garland.
Wheeler made 26 stops for Colgate, which falls to 0-4-1 on the season. Schoedel turned away 21 to help give UNH a 7-0 overall record.
Colgate continues its five-game homestand on Oct. 27 and 28 when they start the ECAC Hockey League slate. On Friday, the Raiders host Yale at 7 p.m., and on Saturday at 4 p.m., the Raiders take on Brown.
