Kelsea Loveless (Lubbock, Texas) registered 14 kills and 10 digs, but it was not enough as Army snuck past the Raiders 3-0 in Patriot League volleyball action. The Black Knights defeated Colgate in three straight games, 30-28, 30-27, 30-28 to stop the Raiders’ three-match win streak.
The loss drops the Raiders to 12-11 overall and 4-5 in Patriot League action. Army improves to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in league play with the victory.
Sophomore
Katrina Zawojski (Palo Alto, Calif.) added 10 kills and 10 digs, while junior
Erin Kanetzke (Cincinnati, Ohio) dropped in nine kills. Freshman setter
Meghan Fanta (Hillsboro, Wis.) delivered 40 assists and had 12 digs. Sophomore
Jackie Adlam (Mill Valley, Calif.) had an outstanding match, racking up a match-high 26 digs.
The Raiders battled the Black Knights hard, but could not quite get over the hump, losing each game by just two or three points. In the opening contest, Colgate battled back from a 23-16 deficit to 24-23 before Army pulled ahead 28-24. The Raiders continued to stay strong, making it a one-point game again 29-28 before Briana Stremick knocked down a kill to end the game at 30-28.
That proved to be the story for the final two games as the Raiders always battled back and fell just short in each contest. The Raiders posted a match-best .306 hitting percentage in the third game, while Army hit at least .218 in all three games, finishing the match at .255.
Stremick paced the Black Knight offense with a match-high 18 kills. Jamie Clark added 13 kills and eight total blocks, while Elizabeth Lazzari also had a strong all-around match with 11 kills and 14 digs. Freshman setter Maureen Bannon had 44 assists, nine digs, and three kills. Eileen Cassidy finished with a team-high 20 digs for Army.
The Raiders will go out of conference for their next match, traveling to play Binghamton on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Colgate closes out its home schedule with a two-match Patriot League set versus Lehigh and Lafayette on Oct. 27 and Oct. 28, respectively.
